To mark Women's History Month, New York City officials are highlighting a newly opened affordable housing complex in the Bronx that prioritizes women led households.
The 64-unit site on Carpenter Avenue in Wakefield is providing affordable homes for people in shelters with a focus on renting units to women led families. This woman identifying as Miss. James has a special needs child. She says they were in a shelter but then were able to secure a housing voucher and now are moved into the new complex.
“Not only did I find a wonderful place to live, a wonderful area to live in, but the supportive people that are in charge here are unmatched. We walked into an apartment that was unfurnished.”
Mayor Adams’ administration is hoping to soon have hundreds of more affordable units available to those in the shelter system.
