NY court strikes down non citizen voting law

New York State's highest court is striking down a controversial law that allows non citizens to vote.

The law passed by the City Council a few years ago would allow more than 800-thousand noncitizens with green cards and work permits to vote in city elections only. It was never implemented as it was tied up in the courts and. It was ruled unconstitutional on Thursday. Supports of the law say the non citizens should have the right to take part city elections because they pay taxes but opponents say that violates the state constitution which only allows citizens to vote.
