Police have charged a 14-year-old boy with the killing of a police officer in Newark.
Authorities say officers were called to an area of Carteret Street and Broadway in the North Ward Friday night following a report of illegal activity. When they arrived shots rang out and 26-year old officer Joseph Azcona was hit with a bullet while still in his patrol car. He later died from his wounds Saturday morning. Another officer was shot as well and is recovering. Hudson County Prosecutor Theadore Stevens says five people were taken into custody including a 14-year-old who is charged with murder.
“We need to focus laser sharp on trying to find the reason why this 14-year-old was in the situation he was, had a gun and felt he could use it against the police.”
Mayor Ras Baraka labeled the shooting a heinous, callous disregard for humanity.
“We have to figure out how to mentor our kids out of difficult situations and problems that they feel like they need to resolve their conflicts with guns and weapons on the streets.”
The other suspects taken into custody are still being questioned.
