Poverty rate rises to 25% in NYC

A new report shows one quarter of an New York City residents are living in poverty.

The Robin Hood and Columbia University study shows the poverty rate based on 2023 data is now at 25 percent, a two percent increase from the prior year and close to double the national rate.

Richard Buery, Jr. , the CEO of Robin Hood says inflation has hit everyone hard. It is a high-cost city where a family of four needs to make at least 50-thousand dollars just to survive. The poverty rate for children is also at 25 percent, The highest since the study began collecting data on child poverty in 2017.
