Registration to vote in school board elections in Newark is now open for 16 and 17 year olds following a historic change in the voting age.
Last year, Newark approved a change to lower the voting age to 16 for school board elections, becoming the first in New Jersey to make such a move. Supporters are hoping this will boost low voter turnout and get high schoolers involved in politics. This past weekend, Newark held a town hall at Bethany Baptist Church to encourage 16 and 17 year olds to vote in April's school board elections. Registration to vote in the upcoming school board races opened Saturday and runs until March 24th.
