New York Governor Kathy Hochul is proposing a series of new strategies to try and make the New York City subway system safer. She gave her state of the state address on Tuesday.

Hochul wants NYPD officers put on every overnight subway train for the next six months and she says the state will pay for it. The governor is also proposing platform barriers at 100 more subway stations and bright LED lighting at every stop. This follows a series of high profile crimes in the subway system.

"I say this because enough is enough. The chaos must end now."

The plan comes after Hochul already deployed members of the national guard to the subway system last year. Mayor Eric Adams who previously added officers to the system is backing the plan.

Also during the state of the state, Hochul is proposing free community college tuition for certain qualifying adults.

Tuition, books and fees would all be free at community colleges around the state under Hochul's plan for those ages 25 to 55 pursuing select associate degrees in high-demand occupations. Hochul says that includes nursing, engineering and teaching.

"These are real savings for New Yorkers pursuing careers and puts money back in their pockets while helping us fill these critical jobs in these essential industries."

The program would be modeled after one in Massachusetts that Hochul says has been successful.
