NYC Can add many more red light cameras

Reuters/Landov

Drivers beware, there will be a lot more red light cameras being installed in New York City soon.

Governor Hochul signed legislation Tuesday to allow for the number of red light cameras to quadruple in New York City, going from 150 to 600. Violators get 50 dollar fines in the mail. Assembly member Jeffery Dinowitz says this is not just a money grab because data shows the number crashes decrease at intersections with cameras.

"If we can change people's driving habits, that really will have a significant impact on safety in the city of New York."

Governor Hochul signed other bills either establishing red light camera programs or expanding them in other communities in the suburbs. She also signed a bill increasing fines for those illegally passing a school bus.
