There's debate over Mayor Eric Adams' City of Yes Housing plan that aims to address a severe housing shortage in New York City. Hearings took place on the matter on Monday and Tuesday.
The Mayor's plan would loosen zoning regulations to make it easier to convert unused office buildings into apartments and allow for new housing units through the conversion basements and attics. Council Speaker Adrienne Adams says Zoning reform is just one important component..
"New Yorkers also need deeper affordability, expanded pathways to home ownership."
Councilman Robert Holden is against The City of Yes plan saying the city's old infrastructure won't be able to handle the housing.
"And then take away the parking. It's almost for developers to just make more money."
The full council will vote on the plan that would change the landscape in many neighborhoods in December. Mayor Adams' goal is to create more than 100-thousand new units over the next 15 years.
