he Staten Island Ferry and NYC Ferry are moving towards cleaner fuel.
The Staten Island Ferry and NYC Ferry will begin testing the use of renewable diesel fuel. Commissioner of the Department of Citywide Administrative Services Louis Molina says this will reduce carbon emissions by 60 percent or more compared to traditional diesel fuel.
"Animal fats and other waste products that would normally be discarded are transformed into a clean reusable energy source that significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions."
This will be a six month pilot program with the goal to transition the entire fleet to renewable diesel next year. The Staten Island Ferry and NYC Ferry carry about 30 million riders annually.
