New York City is now lowering the speed limit in some spots as part of a recently passed new law in New York State.
The DOT just installed new 20-mile-per-hour speed limit signs on a 19-block area in Prospect Park West, Brooklyn. That's where 12 year old Sammy Cohen was killed by a driver more than a decade ago. The new law named after Sammy allows the city to bring down the speed limit. Sammy's father Gary says 20 miles per hour is a big difference.
"There's more time for someone walking or biking to see and avoid an errant driver and the force of impact at 20 miles per hour is so very much less likely to cause death than 25 or 30."
By the end of next year, The DOT will lower speed limits in 250 locations, prioritizing school zones and shared streets.
