New York City's composting program is now available to all city residents.
For the first time this week, residents in the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan have a composting service that previously rolled out in Queens and Brooklyn. Residents can now put out their food scraps and yard waste in a brown sanitation department bin, or any container 55 gallons or less on their recycling day. Julie Tighe, the President of the League of Conservation Voters says the program is a win for the environment.
"We are getting that food waste and that yard waste out of our waste stream. We put it in a much better position."
Residents are required to participate. Fines will start in April of next year.
