A New York City official is calling for a crackdown on fake and obstructed license plates.
Manhattan Borough President Mark Levin says his office did research and estimates that more than 5 percent of vehicles going through New York City tolls have unreadable license plates and it is costing the city about 200 million dollars a year.
"These are drivers who are cheating on paying tolls or on paying fines for things like running a red light or speeding at a time when more and more enforcement is being done with automated cameras."
Levine is calling on the state to impose stricter penalties for driving with an improperly registered vehicle, digital license plates and to use AI to identify obscured plates.
