New Portal Bridge halfway done

The Portal Bridge project, a key part of the massive Gateway plan to expand rail service between New Jersey and New York is now 50 percent complete.

Less than two years after the groundbreaking, Officials say the new Portal North Bridge is slated to be complete on time in year 2026. They marked the halfway point of construction in Kearny on Monday. Michael Cullotta with the Federal Transit Administration says the new bridge will be key to rail commuters seeing fewer disruptions.

"When completed, the new bridge will improve safety and provide more reliable service for over 29 thousand commuters everyday."

The current 114 year old Portal Bridge has had its share of problems leading to big disruptions commuters.
