New Jersey Congressman Donald Payne Jr. died on April 24 at the age of 65.

He continued his father’s political legacy in Newark and New Jersey and was loved by many. New Jersey Democratic Congressman Donald Payne Jr. died Wednesday at the age of 65. Congressman Payne had a cardiac episode earlier this month that left him hospitalized.

In a statement confirming the Congressman’s death Gov. Phil Murphy called his fellow Democrat a “steadfast champion for the people of New Jersey.

Payne served for 12 years in the Newark-area seat his father Donald Sr. had held for more than two decades.

U.S. Senator Cory Booker said Congressman Payne was a trailblazing figure in our civic institutions, dedicating his career to the soul-feeding work of serving others.

Congressman Payne was a great friend to WBGO. He will be missed.
