Construction has started on the largest onsite solar carport and energy storage system in New York State.
Port Authority broke ground Tuesday on the solar carport at JFK Airport's long-term parking lot 9. It will provide covered parking for three thousand vehicles. Port Authority Director Rock Cotton says the solar panels will cover the area the size of 11 football fields, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by more than six-thousand tons annually.
"Reducing our carbon footprint is vital to our effort at the Port Authority to get to the goal of net zero greenhouse emissions by 2050."
The project will help low-income communities in Queens save on their utility bills.
