Fight For Air Climb New Jersey set for Red Bull Arena on April 14

You can support a worthy cause this weekend and really inflate your step total as well.

It’s the Fight for Air Climb New Jersey — 780 stairs at Red Bull Arena, April 14 at 830am — where volunteers climb to fight lung cancer and other lung diseases.

Newark firefighter Michael Petrone has been climbing for years.

“It’s a worthy cause, not everybody’s out there trying to run the fastest time, to try to come in first place or in the top three, people are just doing it to raise money and raise awareness,” he said.

Over the years Petrone has raised more than $12,000 with his Newark Fire Department team.

He says they still need people for this year's event, the 12th annual.

“I don’t know if that for some people is a deterrent is that they feel like, well I’m not in good enough shape to do this, because anybody can do it, you can walk the whole entire course, there’s no mandate that says you must run or you have to beat a certain time, it’s just the whole premise of it is to raise money and to raise awareness,” said Petrone.

More than 50 firefighters from different firehouses will climb in full gear but anyone is welcome.

Petrone said it’s personal for him.

“My grandmother passed away of lung cancer in 2003, so you know it’s something definitely close to my heart,” he said.
