New York City is launching a public awareness campaign over the dangers that e-bikes pose.

NYPD Chief of Transportation Phil Rivera says last year there were 23 e-bike fatalities in the city compared to nine fatalities the year prior. Most he says are single bike collisions with riders loosing control.

"Your new e-bike can reach a top speed of 25 miles per hour. Do you know that is equivalent of a professional bike rider in the Tour de France."

The NYPD and DOT are launching the “Get Smart Before You Start,” campaign. It will use social media, the subway and media outlets to encourage e-bike riders to get trained on riding and learn the rules of the road. They include stopping at stop signs, riding with traffic and wearing a helmet.
