Hochul proposing money for more public pools

Don Pollard

Governor Kathy Hochul is proposing an investment into expanding access to safe swimming across New York State.

The proposed NY Swims program will provide 150 million dollars in grant funding for localities that build 10 new public swimming pools in areas most in need. The money would also fund small pop up above ground pools. 13 year old Lucas Rosado from East Harlem says better access to pools is needed in Latino and Black communities.

"In these communities, a reduction in obesity and drowning rates is greatly needed and providing young people access to pools and lessons will help them experience the numerous physical mental and social benefits swimming has to offer."

Governor Hochul says drownings in New York State have reached record highs in recent years.
