New York City officials think they know the reason why a building partially collapsed in the Bronx last week.

City officials say an engineer misdiagnosed a column, labeling it decorative when if is was really load bearing. Video shows workers removing bricks from around that support column the day the corner of the building collapsed on Billingsley Terrace in Morris Heights. Mayor Eric Adams reacted.

“There are over a million buildings across our city, and it is crucial that New Yorkers are safe in every one of those buildings. But when those who are entrusted to keep us safe cut corners and make catastrophic mistakes, we’re going to take swift action and hold them accountable,”

The Department of Buildings has suspended the engineer from making structural integrity assessment and will review his other 368 façade inspection and safety filings with the city. Crews are in the process of demolishing part of the seven story building while residents wait to move back inside.
