A new performing arts center focused on New York City's immigrant communities is being built in Manhattan. Ground was broken today.

There was 30 million dollars raised to build what's called the People's Theater Project in Inwood on West 206th Street. Executive Director of the Theater Mino Lora says the theater is expected to welcome 28 thousand audience members annually and provide opportunities for over 300 artists from New York City.

"It will also serve as a multi generational community and civic space where our neighbors can come together to learn, to grow, to play."

The theater will showcase immigrant experiences represented in the City as well as community events and be open for student field trips. It is set to open in 2026.
