New York State is trying to diversify the education workforce.

School districts across New York will soon get guidance for developing programs to better attract underrepresented candidates for expanding the teacher workforce. Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation mandating this. The teacher union President in New York City Michael Mulgrew says this will help expand the teacher pool.

"If value in your life comes from helping children so they can have a better life, we want you here. It's not going to be easy. It will be tough but we are here to support you. That's what this bill is saying about the state of New York."

The bill also will give districts guidance on finding available money for the programs.
