New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul speaks at a ribbon cutting ceremony in the Bronx borough of New York on May 4, 2021.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul is focusing on housing, safety and helping the mentally ill to start off her first full term. She gave her state of the state address today.

Governor Hochul detailed steps and policy changes in order to create 800 thousand new homes over the next decade to address a housing shortage.

"Equal access to housing is a must because when there is not sufficient housing people of all income levels struggle and if things get bad, they leave."

Hochul also unveiled a one billion dollar mental health services plan. That includes increasing the number of beds for inpatient psychiatric treatment and creating more housing to serve those with mental illness. Hochul is proposing to raise the minimum wage annually to match inflation. She also is calling for improvements to bail reform.
