The search ended today (Wednesday, November 2) for the man who shot two Newark Police officers Tuesday afternoon in the South Ward. Authorities arrested 30-year old Kendall Howard of East Orange. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says Howard was taken into custody shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The incident prompted a major police presence there and also led to a lockdown of district schools as a precaution.

Howard has been charged with the attempted murder of the two unidentified police officers. Both were hospitalized in stable condition. One was shot in the neck, the other was shot in the leg.

Law enforcement officials allege that Howard shot the two officers as they attempted to question him in the area of Chancellor Avenue and Van Velsor Place around two o’clock yesterday afternoon. Newark MayorRas Baraka held a news conference last night to give more details.

Howard has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin was also at the news conference.
