Officials are marking the 20th anniversary of the formal end to recovery operations at Ground Zero following the 9-11 terror attacks.

For about nine months, tens of thousands of recovery workers removed toxic debris from Ground Zero. President of the 9-11 Memorial Alice Greenwald was among those honoring the many who have passed away since from illnesses linked to the toxic site.

“It is a solemn responsibility to sustain our collective efforts in support of those who continue to suffer from 9-11 related illnesses and injuries.”

There were 9-11 survivors, elected officials and first responders on hand. Some brought flowers to a Memorial Glade within the 9-11 Memorial dedicated to the recovery workers.
