New York City’s Taxi And Limousine Commission is considering raising the taxi meter rate.

The last yellow taxi meter fare hike took place a decade ago. Head of the Taxi Worker’s Alliance Bhairavi Desai testified at a recent hearing that a raise is well overdue.

“Drivers have seen a drop off in ridership and then more of their fare going to paying the MTA and now on top of all of it, inflation and the rise in gasoline.”

She is advocating for the average passenger to pay about 2 dollars more per trip resulting in about 25 bucks an hour for drivers.’ The taxi industry has been struggling because of medallion debt and the coronavirus pandemic.
