A couple councilmen are looking to suspend New York City’s liquor license surcharge for businesses.

Councilmen Justin Brannan and Keith Powers have introduced legislation that would pause the city’s surcharge on liquor licenses for small businesses that have been hit hard from the coronavirus pandemic.

“We have seen over the last few years that our bar and restaurant industry has been in a major moment of crisis here in New York City and we have to be doing every single thing we can to make sure they stay afloat here.”

Right now businesses have to pay thousands to the state for a liquor license and then the city tacks on a 25 percent surcharge. The legislation which Mayor Adams backs would suspend that surcharge for a year.
