The Adams Administration is bringing back and expanding the Gifted and Talented program in New York City schools. There will be an additional 100 gifted and talented seats for kindergarteners and one-thousand for third grade. Schools Chancellor David Banks says 2nd graders in the top 10 percent of their class based on four core subjects can apply for a seat. He says the program will be expanded to all school districts, creating better equity.

“We believe that we will greatly increase the level of diversity in this program, expanding equity and access is critically important for us.”

Former Mayor Bill de Blasio had tried to get rid of the Gifted and Talented program at the end of his term after complaints the process to get in favored wealthier families.
