New York City is starting to get rid of homeless encampments.
Mayor Adams is ordering the removal of about 180 homeless encampments on the streets. He wants to connect the homeless with social services and shelters which he insists are safe and at the same time clean up public spaces.
“We are walking past people that are living on cardboard boxes in these makeshift inhumane houses. This is just not right.”
The homeless will be given 24 hour notice before their encampment is taken down. The Coalition for the homeless disagrees with the move and says the city needs to expand access to safer housing and shelters.
