A couple New York City officials are calling for the coronavirus vaccine to be mandatory for school children.

Only about half of New York City’s eligible public school students are fully vaccinated. Comptroller Brad Lander and the city’s public advocate wrote a letter to Mayor Eric Adams, requesting the COVID vaccine be required for students starting next school year.

“Most people will do it because they get the meningitis vaccine and the other vaccines that are required and the fact that there is a process for seeking an exception. The overwhelming majority of students will go ahead and get vaccinated.”

Lander and the public advocate are also requesting the Department of Education accommodate teachers and students who want to remain in classrooms where everyone is wearing a mask.
