Pedestrians walk past a "Look!" sign on the crosswalk at the intersection of 42nd Street and Second Avenue in New York. Cities all over the country are looking for ways to get pedestrians to pay more attention.

New York City is trying to address last year’s spike in deadly crashes on the streets. Many of fatal pedestrian crashes have occurred at intersections. The DOT plans on reimagining one-thousand intersections by improving traffic signals and raising crosswalks. Fabiola Mendieta’s five year old son was killed crossing the street.

“Crossing the street should not be a death sentence but it too often is because of dangerous street designs and that fact that street improvements have not been made quickly enough.”

Meanwhile, Mayor Adams says there will be stepped up enforcement for failure to yield violations and a new rule where drivers and cyclists are required to stop at all intersections if there is a pedestrian waiting on the corner to cross.
