Before leaving office at the end of the year, Mayor de Blasio is putting 38 million dollars into a Delivering Green plan that uses more environmental friendly ways to transport freight.

Nearly 90 percent of the city’s freight is moved by trucks. The City’s Department of Transportation Commissioner Hank Gutman says he wants to use a combo of boats, cargo bikes and small electric vehicles to reduce the number of 18 wheelers transporting goods throughout the city.

“if we are going to save the planet, if you we are going to address climate change, if we area going to keep our streets from becoming more and more crowded, this has to happen.”

Part of the five year plan that the next administration will have to look over includes expanding waterfront access for freight movement, shifting goods from the road to the rail and creating micro distribution spaces.
