Officials are cracking down on loud vehicle noises throughout New York State. Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation today that bans repair shops from installing or selling vehicle exhaust systems and mufflers that increase noise. It also bumps up penalties for drivers using loud exhaust systems. There’s been a surge of vehicle related noise complaints in NYC recently including from Brooklyn including from resident Mauren Launders.

“Modified exhaust systems serve no purpose other than to create fear, chaos and intimidation.”

The legislation also means vehicles will now be checked for altered louder exhaust systems during routine inspections.
