President Biden has called for Governor Cuomo to resign after a state investigation found that he had sexually harassed 11 women, breaking state and federal laws. Lawmakers in Albany expect to wrap up an impeachment inquiry soon. Lauren Leader, a gender and workplace expert, said Cuomo can’t continue to run the state effectively. “The report by Tish James and the independent counsel is absolutely damning,” she said, “the accusations even before the report were horrific, now we have even more evidence of even more accusers.” Leader was referring to New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who at a press conference Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said Cuomo “can no longer remain in office.” Leader applauded the women who came forward. “My hope is that people will continue to blow the whistle and continue to come forward and we’re gonna keep shining the light until we root out this kind of behavior and until women can work and live free from harassment,” said Leader. Cuomo is facing a criminal investigation by the Albany County prosecutor. He becomes the latest in a string of men in positions of power to be accused of abusing women, joining names like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein. Leader said real change in this area is still a ways off. “These cases now are making it clear just how far we still have to go and how difficult it is to hold powerful people accountable for terrible behavior,” she said. She said we have to see more women come forward, as they did in the Cuomo case, to put an end to sexual harassment. |
