Congestion is worse in the New York City area than anywhere else in the nation. A report out by the Texas Transportation Institute has the New York City region surpassing LA as the leader in gridlock. The recently released study was done in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. Spokesperson Tim Lomax says the city’s congestion declined from 2019 but not as much as other metro areas.

“There’s a combination of fewer people taking public transit, more people moving around by car. An awful lot of essential workers in the area relative to the other places we looked at.”

He says since the study, recent traffic patterns are near what they were prior to the pandemic for the afternoon commute but traffic is lighter in the morning.
