Now that he knows who his opponent is, Curtis Sliwa, the GOP mayoral candidate in New York City, met reporters on the streets of Midtown to talk about how he’s different from the Democrats when it comes to public safety.
“Unlike Eric Adams, I’m gonna go right to the heart of the matter,” he said. “We need to hire more police, we need to refund police, we need the Street Crime Unit now.”
Sliwa told reporters he wants to take his campaign to the streets -- and invited Adams, who is a prohibitive favorite in November, to join him.
“Let’s go into every neighborhood because I’ve certainly been there, come ride with me in the subways, every week let’s have a debate in a different neighborhood in a different borough of the City of New York,” Sliwa said.
Sliwa made a pitch to voters who do not usually vote Republican.
“I’m also the candidate on the Independent party line so those folks who would never cross over and vote for a Republican who happen to be Democrats or Independents will have the ability to vote for Curtis Sliwa on the Independent party line,” he said.
Sliwa laced into Mayor De Blasio for not using federal Covid relief funds to hire more police, which President Biden said cities in need could do.
