Shootings are down significantly in June in New York City, reversing a trend. There was a sharp increase in gun violence in the city from May of last year up until last month. There were 165 Shooting incidents in June, a 20 percent drop compared to June of last year.
“I am not happy with that current level but it is progress.”
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea says they made double the number of gun arrests last month and he points to key gang takedowns.
“In the last 60 days, seven critical cases have come down. Those seven cases resulted in 94 individuals and these are the worst of the worst.”
Overall index crime is up for June driven by an increase in grand larceny and robberies.
