There's concern about a big increase in street fatalities this year in New York City.

In the firsts four months of the year, Transportation Alternatives data shows 70 pedestrians, cyclists and motorists have been killed, putting New York City on track for the most street deaths since 2014. This comes with a decrease in traffic during the pandemic. Spokesperson for Transportation Alternatives Cory Epstein blames reckless drivers but says the de Blasio Administration needs to do more.

“We have very good protected bike lanes in some areas. We have pedestrian plazas in some areas but these solutions need to be expanded to the entire city.”

He's also calling for more car free zones and physical barriers to protect those zones. Mayor de Blasio says his administration will continue improving street safety.
