NYC Struggles With Spike in Shootings

Police Shooting

New York City officials are trying to figure out how to deal with a huge spike in shootings in the last month or so after yet another violent weekend.

Mayor de Blasio said there are multiple reasons for the huge uptick but mainly blamed coronavirus.

“The economy is not working. People have been pent up for months and months," he said. "There are so many issues underlying this challenge but to address it, it’s not just one answer either. It’s going to take a lot of different pieces.”

NYPD Chief of Department Terry Monahan pointed to several factors. “Bail reform, COVID and courts being closed. It means a lot of different individuals are on the street that should not be on the street," he said. "And we have seen them involved in violence.”

The mayor vowed to, in his words, double down on addressing the shootings.
