NYC Updates Vision Zero Plan

The New York City Department of Transportation released its updated Vision Zero Action Plan.

Officials say nearly half of all pedestrian fatalities occur on a small percentage of streets.  Mayor Bill de Blasio is taking immediate action.

“This year you’re going to see more pedestrian head starts at key intersections.  It’s going to give people more time to cross the street and make them safer.  This year you’re going to see traffic lights retimed in certain key areas to reduce speeding.”

By the end of 2019, many of those streets will be equipped with speed cameras or re-engineered.

“Strive to do well over fifty projects and again, what this report targets, some of the most crash prone corridors and intersections,” said Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg.

New locations have been added in all five boroughs.  NYC Department of Transportation stats show a decrease in traffic accidents at corridors and intersections previously prioritized by the Vision Zero plan.
