WBGO Remembers Radio Veteran and Educator Richard Hinchliffe

RIchard Hinchliffe

The radio and higher education worlds are mourning the loss of Richard Hinchliffe of Glen Ridge, New Jersey.  Hinchliffe passed away earlier this month from glioblastoma.  He was 68.

Dick Hinchliffe had a distinguished career in journalism.  He was the former News Director at WNYC and worked for Bloomberg Radio and the Associated Press during his broadcasting career.  You may remember hearing Dick anchoring some newscasts right here at WBGO in 2010 and 2011.

Dick Hinchliffe was a true professional who gave back in many ways…he most recently was an Assistant Professor of Radio and the Director of WNTI at Centenary University.

I had the pleasure of talking to his Montclair State University radio classes where he also was the general manager of the college radio station from 2011 to 2015.  His students were engaged and you could tell they loved their professor. His wonderful mix of humor and knowledge made him a delight to be around.

Many of us here at WBGO, past and present, greatly respected the talents of Dick Hinchliffe.  Our hearts go out to Dick’s wife Katherine, his daughters and family. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Brain Tumor Association.

He will be missed.

Doug Doyle has been News Director at WBGO since 1998 and has taken his department to new heights in coverage and recognition. Doug and his staff have received more than 250 awards from organizations like PRNDI (now PMJA), AP, New York Association of Black Journalists, Garden State Association of Black Journalists and the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists.
