Next-Gen Grooves: Christian McBride Debuts New Quintet Ursa Major on 'Points Of Light' | New Day New Play

The musical constellations in Christian McBride's galaxy run deep and shine brilliantly - from his early years as a sideman with Bobby Watson, Freddie Hubbard & countless others, including Chick Corea and Pat Metheny. His own bands show an indefatigable creative spirit, from the CMB, Inside Straight, New Jawn, A Christian McBrideSituation, Tip City, and his Grammy Award winning Christian McBride Big Band.

So, where does one look for the next inspiration? For McBride, it's the next generation of players brought together for Ursa Major, and their new release, Points Of Light. Featuring the leader on acoustic and electric bass, saxophonist Nicole Glover, drummer Savannah Harris, Mike King on piano and keyboards, and guitarist Ely Perlman,
there are originals from the band members, with the feeling from funky to blistering straight ahead, with a wonderful reimagination of a George Duke composition, "No Rhyme, No Reason" to complete this new release.

Hear a track from Points Of Light each weekday morning @ 8:20AM, another feature made possible by the members of WBGO!

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
