Remembering Joey DeFrancesco: Live At Keystone Korner Preserves Jazz Master’s Final Chapter | New Day New Play

To speak of Joey DeFrancesco, the words of his good friend Christian McBride say it best: "I met him when I was twelve years old, he was thirteen, and even then, it was clear he was different. We were just kids, but Joey already had a deep understanding of the music - how it swung, how it breathed, how it spoke. I learned so much in those early years from him, not just about harmony or groove, but about commitment."

That commitment Christian spoke of was apparent every time Joey DeFrancesco started to play. After Jimmy Smith, Joey didn't simply revive a tradition. He made it modern. He made it undeniable.

Live At Keystone Korner captured Joey and his trio just one week before his untimely passing in August of 2022. You'll hear Joey's blistering, soul-drenched display, with drummer Anwar Marshall and guitarist Lucas Brown, who also handles the organ when Joey shows his considerable trumpet and tenor sax skills on a couple of the eight originals captured that night.

Hear a track from Joey DeFrancesco Live At Keystone Korner each weekday morning @ 8:20AM, another feature made possible by the members of WBGO!

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
