Gritty, Soulful, and Unmistakable: Bennie Wallace Reunites with Old Friends on ‘French Postcard’ | New Day New Play

Picasa

Saxophonist Bennie Wallace's gritty, soulful sound is easily identifiable to those who enjoyed his rollicking mid 80's records on the Blue Note label, or his encounters with Flip Phillips and Scott Hamilton, or his sideman contributions to albums by Mose Allison, Solomon Burke, Art Farmer, and Anthony Wilson.

With French Postcard Bennie hooked up with old musical friends Peter Washington on bass, guitarist Anthony Wilson, pianist Donald Vega, drummer and master tambourinist Herlin Riley, and newcomer Simon Moullier on vibraphone. Hear Herlin work that tambourine (and drums) with Bennie and Peter Washington on "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho", alongside a couple of Wallace originals, a Jobim nugget, and a Wallace approach to Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight"

Hear a track from Bennie Wallace's French Postcard each weekday morning @ 8:20AM, another feature made possible by the members of WBGO!

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
