From his years as a Jazz Messenger with Art Blakey through decades leading his own Horizon group, alto saxophonist Bobby Watson has remained a vital force in contemporary jazz. He has long embraced the vision and responsibility of nurturing the next generation, welcoming fresh voices while remaining firmly rooted in the values of his music.
Joined by longtime collaborators bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Jones, Bobby’s new release Continuum also highlights the younger talents of pianist Jordan Williams, trumpeter Wallace Roney, Jr. and trombonist Krysten Ellis. The trajectory of this Kansas City-born septuagenarian looks back for a reinvention of “On the One” and “Beatitudes” done in the 80’s originally with Curtis and Victor, a gorgeous read on a Mal Waldron classic, alongside some newer compositions to get inside of and enjoy.
