Drummer Ulysses Owens Jr. possesses a mindset that nourishes his creative talents while keeping him open to challenge. This served him well when visiting the Drumeo Studios in British Columbia, Canada where he was challenged to play along with tunes, many of which he'd never heard before. Much of the music he was given was from Grunge bands. Not only did he fare well with his rhythms, he fell in love with the idea of reimagining this style of music.
Kind of Grunge is the result. Along with bassist Thomas Milovac, trumpeter Benny Benack III, alto saxophonist Langston Hughes II, pianist Tyler Bullock, and guitarist Dan Wilson, the collective redressed music of Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains, Hole, and Pearl Jam, alongside a Leadbelly update which gained notoriety when performed by Nirvana on MTV Unplugged.
