The creative spirit of vibraphonist Stefon Harris runs deep, whether in duo setting with Jacky Terrasson, in Cuba with David Sanchez and Christian Scott, reimagining Tchaikovsky and Bach, and his numerous outings with his group Blackout.
Legacy Dances, the new recording from Stefon Harris & Blackout, provides us with a look at our cultural legacy, with reason to dance. Dedicated to the late Casey Benjamin, heard here on sax, aerophone and vocoder, the recording also features pianist Christian Sands, bassist Dezron Douglas, and drummer Terreon Gully, joining the leader on vibraphone and marimba, alongside special guests including flutist Anne Drummond, clarinetist Oran Etkin, and spoken word from Dwayne Clark.
There's a reimagination of West End Blues, a salute to Newark stride master Willie "The Lion" Smith, and much more, to, as the leader says, "absorb the wisdom and humanity of our ancestors through their blues, their grooves, and their sophisticated melodic and harmonic milleus."
