Joey Alexander Balances High Energy and Sublime Standards on ‘Celestial Keeper' | New Day New Play

At WBGO we have been following the trajectory of Joey Alexander since he came to the U.S. at 11, wowing audiences at Jazz at Lincoln Center, at the request of Wynton Marsalis himself! His first album, My Favorite Things quickly followed, showing how he understood the works of Coltrane, Monk, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Dizzy Gillespie & more.

Blink! And we now have Celestial Keeper, Joey Alexander's 8th album as a leader. This time out we are made aware of his developing compositional skills alongside standards on both piano and Fender Rhodes, with bassist Kris Funn and drummer Jonathan Barber, special guest saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, and guest vocalists Alita Moses and Lisa Fischer. The music here features both high energy and hush from one of our most engaging players today.

Enjoy a track from Celestial Keeper, Joey Alexander's new release from Mack Avenue Records each weekday morning @ 8:20AM, another feature made possible by the members of WBGO.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
