Make no mistake, jazz is not a museum piece. But by visiting the rich history of the music, the modern creators and improvisers can capture the past and play it forward for ears to come.
Such is the case with pianist Ted Rosenthal, whose knowledge of the jazz canon creates a constant new wardrobe for music of the Good Old Days.
Joined by by two trios of bassists Martin Wind and Noriko Ueda, and drummers Tim Horner and Quincy Davis, Ted opens with a swinging take on Cole Porter's evergreen "From This Moment On". The late great clarinetist Ken Peplowski joins in on two Rosenthal originals. There's the Scott Joplin classic "Maple Leaf Rag" followed by Ted's own "Schmatta Rag", with some Vernon Duke and Hoagy Carmichael to show that the only thing constant in this music is change, masterfully done by Ted Rosenthal and his bandmates.
