Unmistakably Alive: Richard Baratta Reimagines the Legacy of Charlie Parker with his New Album, 'Another Kind of Bird' | New Day New Play

To pay tribute to someone like Charlie Parker can be an indefatigable task. Charlie Parker's music has been recorded, studied, debated and canonized for more than seventy years. You either bring something new or risk being drowned out by history. On Another Kind of Bird, drummer and bandleader Richard Baratta does not step lightly.

Joined by pianist and arranger Bill O'Connell, the delivery is bold reimagining of Parker's music, with an all-star cast, including saxophonists Eric Alexander, Abraham Burton, Craig Handy and Vincent Herring, guitarist Paul Bollenback, bassist Michael Goetz and percussionist Paul Rossman. As a result, Baratta and his bandmates deliver Parker energized, expanded and unmistakably alive!

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
