Trumpeter Brian Lynch’s new release, 'Torch Bearers' is a nod to Barry Harris and his dedication to “finding your own notes” | New Day New Play

The cultural theatre of jazz was significantly illuminated by pianist Barry Harris, whose codes for bebop and beyond continue to be of major influence today. Trumpeter Brian Lynch’s new release, Torch Bearers is a nod to Harris and his dedication to “finding your own notes”. With pianists Orrin Evans, Rob Schneiderman and Luis Perdomo, Lynch is also joined by bassist Boris Kozlov, drummers Kyle Swan and Ulysses Owens, Jr., and special guests alto Sax master Charles McPherson (one of Barry Harris’ first students), and vocalist Samara Joy (one of Harris’ last students). There’s inventive originals, some Dizzy Gillespie, a Barry Harris nugget, and “The Joy of Love”, a McPherson tune with lyrics and vocals by Samara.

Hear a track from Torch Bearers each weekday morning @ 8:20AM, another feature made possible by the members of WBGO.

Mon-“Luck Of The Draw”
Tues-“The Joy Of Love”(feat. Samara Joy)
Wed-“Kyle’s Dilemma”
Thurs-“The Juggler”
Fri-“Blue N’ Boogie”

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
